A Letter to the parents
A LETTER TO THE PARENTS
Dear parents!
WHY SOME KIDS DO BETTER THAN OTHERS IN SCHOOL!
Last year August, a parent met me and told me about her desire for me to take up her daughter up on Tutorials( private lessons). On the grounds that she would like her daughter to sit for the first school leaving certificate Examination ( FSLC) from Basic 4. She told me I should drill her on English and mathematics.
I had to run a test on her , and I found out she was 8 years old, she was quite brilliant, On the two subject I was teaching her , she was doing very well in English studies but was poor in mathematics,, I noticed she was struggling with some basics in mathematics.
So I had to continue drilling her in mathematics, this was a Herculean task because she didn't know the multiplication table, which implies that she couldn't multiply and divide effectively. So I gave her the assignment of learning the multiplication tables and reciting them for me first thing every morning. But I realized that she wasn't doing well, obviously she wasn't learning it at home.
It pained me because her mom has left me to do the work alone, forgetting that this would have to be a collaborative effort if her daughter would have to hit the zenith.
So on this day I decided that I wouldn't teach the girl, I would drill her all day on the multiplication table ( my main aim of doing this, is to know whether the mother was really checking up on her daughter, to know what she learnt each day and whether the Teacher was doing well).
So the next day, the girl came and with a note from her mum, threatening to pull her out of the tutorials because she wasn't taught anything the previous day. I laughed and thought to myself " this woman really checks up on her daughter). But I had an instinct to ask the girl how her mother knew she learnt nothing the other day, she now told me that she was the one who told her mum.
I thought to myself " this brilliant girl would have have gotten to another level of her parents took it upon themselves to really make sure their kids revised and study what they've learnt in school, at home.
There are three categories of parents
1.) Those who've employed the services of a tutor at home, to take up their kids after school, at home.
2.) Those who don't really need the services of a tutor, they create our time themselves to teach and make sure their kids revised everything learnt in school.
3.) The ones who don't care whether their kids are learning or not. They think they've put them in the best school with the best teachers and pay huge amount of money for school fees.
I've got bad news for parents in the 3rd category, your action is causing more harm than good to these kids. Compare the kids of the parents in the first two categories and your kids you'll realize that they do much better than yours.
Researchers have found out that students forget 80% of what they've been taught, once they cross the school gate. And what will make them remember and retain it??? "Revision" .
Parents !!! Don't leave the work for the teachers only , most of these teachers don't care, they came to look for their daily bread. Gone are the days when people teach for passion.
Let me further shock you, some people are of the opinion that burden of training and teaching of children should be shared 50- 50 between the parents and the teachers. But I negate that opinion!!!
"Parents should bear 60% of the burden why the teachers bear 40% of the burden.
If you fall among the 3rd category of parents, Please have a rethink!!
